Words cannot describe the pleasure we felt in welcoming David Park, the assistant concertmaster of the Utah Symphony (USA), and his Stradivarius!
Simple, funny and modest without taking himself too seriously, David charmed us all.Fascinated by Bordeaux’s wines, he was traveling to our region for the very first time and was tickled to have the opportunity to visit this land that has been blessed by the gods and that produces such objects of his desires! His catching enthusiasm, in spite of a long journey and jet lag, made the evening a great moment that will remain in the memories of Musique au Coeur’s members and Henri Lurton for a long time.
On the program after the rehearsal: a visit of the cellars, which intrigued David, who was extremely curious. This was followed by a tasting of a few recent vintages such as the 2009 (he took great joy in tasting this wine that is still in the barrel but is already so promising) and the 2006 which proved delicious and highly aromatic – whereas it had hitherto been mostly closed.Aromas of roses, white flowers (lily) and red fruits were released just one hour after decanting.
A typically French dinner (cheese soufflé, blanquette de veau, matured cheeses and thin apple tart) followed, accompanied by three fine Brane vintages (2004, 2001 and 1996). Music- and wine-related conversations were rife and were punctuated by laughter and entertaining anecdotes. This is how we learned that David, who arrived in the US at the age of 7, came from a family of musicians, and that his second passion after the violin is wine; most interesting, we found out that he never goes to bed before first examining his cellar and gazing fondly at his bottles.A refined connoisseur, he feels tremendous admiration for Bordeaux’s Cru Classé wines!
Sunday’s concert delighted an audience of around 300 people who gathered in Château Branaire Ducru’s large orangery. It was an extraordinary concert, the quality of which we rarely encounter in this part of the peninsula, since it is too far from Bordeaux.Accompanied by the talented pianist Françoise Larra from the Bordeaux Opera, David Park started with Brahms, Mozart and then Ravel. In the second part, he played Kriessler and Sarasate, and then he finished with Massenet. While playing ‘Meditation’ from Thais, David became overcome with emotion and the public saw tears running down his cheeks.“Tears of happiness,” he explained later. “The happiness of playing in a region, a setting and before a public that are all so special to [him].”It was a dream that he never expected to come true but did, thanks to Musique au Coeur du Médoc and Mr. and Mrs. Maroteau.

David Park, a Korean-born American, a lover of fine wine and a huge fan of Château Brane-Cantenac, will be entertained for a private visit and tasting and then a dinner by Henri Lurton and a few members of the association “Musique au Coeur du Médoc,’ which will feature him in a violin and piano concert at Château Branaire Ducru this Sunday at 4 pm.
David will play on the famous 1718 Stradivarius ‘Firebird’ that belonged to Antoine de St Exupéry and is the current property of Peter Prier, a stringed instrument maker and collector in Salt Lake City.In his luggage, he also brought a Tourte bow, the equivalent of Stradivarius violins in terms of rarity and quality.
During the concert, he will play Sarasate, Mozart, Ravel, Brahms and other violin masterpieces for the utmost pleasure of our ears and souls...But this evening, the pleasure will be on our palates!

Yesterday, on Thursday, January 6, all of the staff members were invited by Henri Lurton to a luncheon to celebrate the start of a new year that we hope will be happy, prosperous and, especially, marked by good health!
This year, we innovated with ‘electronic’ greetings, under a picture that was taken by photographer Patrick Durand. However, nothing can replace a real convivial, warm and...gastronomic gathering during which the whole Brane team came together around the Christmas tree that Maria had decorated in Brane's colors and under which each person found a special gift.
Here are a few pictures of the festive event, filled with games and mad laughter!
